Dance of Death
120 years of Bamberg
In 2026, the cathedral hill will become the backdrop for a dialogue between death and personalities.
Every two years, during a time of silence and reflection, the cathedral square of the World Heritage city of Bamberg becomes the impressive backdrop for the spectacular performance of a ‘dance of death’. Together with the Bamberg Citizens' Ensemble, AGIL e.V. revives the medieval tradition of dance of death performances as travelling theatre.
This year, for the first time, part of our own life story will be performed in the play ‘Totentanz – 120 Years of Bamberg’. In the scenes, people facing their approaching death speak with the personification of death and receive words of comfort or warning. This human perspective is complemented by a contemporary panorama of formative events in German history. From the horrors of war to the fall of the Berlin Wall to the pandemic.
